Org. Setting and Reporting
This internship is located with the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT), under the Policy, Strategy and Governance Division. The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the Office. The internship is unpaid and can be either part-time or full-time depending on your status. Interns work four to five days per week (20-35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in OICT.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities:
• The Intern will support the AI Policy and governance initiatives of OICT.
• Contribute to the development of an AI policy for the UN Secretariat.
• Conduct research and produce briefs on key themes of relevance to the AI policy.
• Develop content for an online (sharepoint) environment that communicates our work to clients.
• Contribute to the development of an AI assessment methodology that will complement the AI policy and align with the Data Protection and Privacy Policy.
• Help with the coordination of the policy group, as needed.
• The intern will also support Data Protection and Privacy (DPP) initiatives.
Concretely, the intern will:
• Contribute to the advancement of technical elements outlined in the DPP policy, including but not limited to the development of a catalogue/wiki on the many different types of privacy enhancing technologies.
• The intern will also contribute to the roll out of a Responsible Tech Playbook for the organization.
• The intern will: Contribute to the introduction of Responsible Tech guidance in the UN Secretariat; Support the rolling out of the Responsible Technology Playbook, including through the development of promotional materials.
• The intern may also support any other business that arises within the overall scope of Technology Governance.
• The intern will have an opportunity to gain practical knowledge and understanding in the development of global technology governance at the United Nations.

Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others. Places team agenda before personal agenda. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Communication:
Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
Studies/degree in the areas of Information and Communications Technology, Media Studies, Information Science, Information Systems, Information Management, Project Management, Business Management, Marketing, Communications, Library Science or related field is desirable.
Proficiency in standard office automation equipment (e.g. computer, scanner, printer, etc.) and software systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows 7 or similar; Microsoft Office or similar; Lotus Notes or similar, etc.) is required. Familiarity with cutting-edge technology and tools and/or have experience with social networking and collaboration platforms is desirable.
Candidates should also have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and view.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
Assessment
Applicants are encouraged to clearly indicate their areas of interests and highlight their specific skills and/or experience in their cover note. They are asked to do so carefully in order to enhance the value of the internship for both themselves and the receiving UN department.
